What does everyone generally want out of life?

Certainly, things like being in great shape, achieving professional success, and being surrounded by loved ones are more or less universal. You could say, essentially, that everyone wants to reach their full potential.

Not only fitness programs and entrepreneurial training guides, but even high speed digital devices all offer the promise of helping us to realise our potential.

Of course, it’s not exactly straightforward to achieve your full potential – which is no doubt why so many of us find ourselves feeling uneasy about this concept on a regular basis, and harbour the unpleasant suspicion that we might not actually be doing our best, or putting our best foot forward.

Although there will be many different ways to reach your full potential in different circumstances and situations, there are some general principles that can help you increase your chances of reaching your full potential in any domain.

Here are a few tips and guidelines to keep in mind.

Be positive and not nihilistic

Nihilism can be the most destructive thing in the world when you are trying to reach your full potential.

A nihilistic view is basically one that believes that everything has no meaning or value, and everything is therefore pointless. Nihilism usually comes with excessive bitterness, fatalism and sarcasm as well.

To truly live up to your potential, you must have the ability to enjoy and appreciate life and find meaning in it.

There are many reasons people end up with certain views on life and the world, including nihilistic ones. However, it is possible to find the things that inspire you and help you be more outgoing and positive about the world.

This means that being passionate about and interested in something can help you to achieve your full potential and live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Dare to make an attempt, and to follow your dreams even if it doesn’t work out the first time

A simple, overwhelming feeling of doubt or nervousness can keep people from reaching their full potential. This can make any goal or dream seem unattainable and even futile.

However, it is important to realize that you are almost always better off if you dare to try and pursue your dreams, regardless of whether you “fail” to do so.

It is equally important to realize that not everyone “gets it right” when setting ambitious goals or working on significant or meaningful projects. However, simply getting started and being invested in your work can help you get to a point where you are truly successful. This is largely due to the incremental changes you make along the way.

These days, there are a range of options when forming a company that you can choose from, in addition to all sorts of different tools, avenues, and approaches that can help you to make any number of other personal dreams and projects a reality – or to at least take steps in the right direction.

You must be open to trying to reach your full potential.

Your daily habits are a major factor in your destiny

We often think only of the big, lofty things that we have to do in life as influencing our personal destiny and the direction we take our lives in overall. But, these things are often heavily influenced by our daily routines as much as anything else – in other words, the habits we do every day without even realizing it.

While some actions or situations can have a profound impact on our lives, others are more subtle and incremental. However, the way you live your life day-to-day will influence everything, from your career to your relationships.

It is important to pay attention to your daily routines and choose and shape them to help you reach your goals.

The habit expert James Clear, author of the book “Atomic Habits,” has one very compelling idea on this subject: he suggests viewing each repetition of a given habit as a vote being cast for a particular identity we want to manifest and embody.

You are strengthening the character of an athlete and a fit person every time you go to the fitness center or play a sport. You are strengthening the artist’s character every time you paint.

When you want to maximize and reach your full potential, don’t underestimate the power habit.

Do things that will help you feel whole and in proper balance and relation (to yourself and your surroundings)

All of us have internal intuitions and awarenesses which can help us to see if we are living our lives correctly.

People from all walks of life, over the course of history, have gone on record stating that acting and living in a way that made them feel whole and in alignment internally, was the best way of maximizing their potential and living in the most authentic, meaningful, and moral way.

If you feel uneasy, uncomfortable or misaligned in your conduct, it’s probably a sign you need to make some changes. You are unlikely to reach your full potential unless you do.

You should have a clear idea of what you want, not just a superficial one

If you don’t know what you want, it’s hard to reach your full potential.

You can achieve your full potential by setting goals and being clear about your future direction of choice. This will, very likely, play a big role in helping you to feel fulfilled and satisfied.

Of course, it is worth pointing out that you shouldn’t just set yourself goals in a shallow sense, where you only focus on things like making a certain amount of money per year, getting a house of a particular size, or buying a particular brand of sports car.

Although it is fine to have material goals, it is important to remember that there are deeper, more meaningful things that you must focus on if you want your potential to be fulfilled.

There are many famous and wealthy people who are experiencing their own crises of meaning and don’t believe they are reaching their full potential, for example. If flashy cars and healthy bank balances were enough, this wouldn’t be the case.

Be consistent and show up for work with discipline and determination. But make sure it is worthwhile

It’s not all just about being in the right mindset or orienting yourself properly towards the world, when it comes to maximizing your potential. Realizing your full potential also means actually showing up every day and doing the work even though you don’t feel like it.

You can achieve your full potential in part by persevering, being consistent, and having “grit“.

However, it is important to ensure that the work you do is worthwhile. That it is rewarding and uplifting for you to show up every day and work on projects that are meaningful to you.

If you grind through each day with sheer discipline, doing work that you hate, something is going to give sooner or later.
