Explaining Flying to Toddlers: Avery & Daddy Ep. 7

One of the biggest fears most parents of toddlers face is traveling with them. I say this with very little experience and only hearing from a handful of other parents’ scary ventures, but figure it’s a safe assumption. Am I wrong?

I recorded a video of me explaining flying to Avery in order to help prepare her for her first time on a plane. In retrospect, it probably helped nothing, and maybe as you read/watch this, that’s being confirmed. But hey, if not for her, I feel better after at least trying to explain flying.

Think I did a good job at explaining? The toy plane running into the wall doesn’t exactly portray a realistic flight, but at least it looks like a plane. The ear popping, loud noise making, and turbulence can only come with experience. Crap, I just upped my anxiety. Good thing Going Mom will be there to help us both!

Well, I’m off and ready to enjoy time with my family in Colorado. Hope to get lots of hiking and kayaking and awesome coffee in while there. Kelley told me not to plan anything on Wednesday, the day before we return, so I’m excited to see what she has planned.

Not sure when I’ll post about our trip, but stay tuned!

Have a great week!

  1. First time we flew with my daughter, she was 4 months old. I am horrible with flying, I mean horrible. We flew from Victoria, BC to Winnipeg, MB. She was great! I think I was just scared and worried because I know I can’t handle flying so I didn’t know how she was going to manage.

    Have a fun trip!

  2. Im probably going to sound arrogant, but… been doing long haul flying (with flights across oceans and two transfers) for 5 years, no Mommy only me, Daddy, with one or two toddlers (girls). Really the biggest pain are the layovers and transferring your crew across airports. I just did a flight with two 4 hour layovers and those were painful for us. I guess the worst one was having to turn back halfway over the Atlantic Ocean and spend half a night in JFK and the other via an hour taxi drive through NYC at 3AM in the Marriot Midtown Manhattan, which actually wasnt fun. Suffice to say to everyone, flying with kids isnt really as scary as so many people think. Kids love it. Just do it. And for the rest of the year whenever they hear a plane in the sky they look up and say something about being on an airplane. No probs, really. Hope you had a good trip. Im sure you did.

    1. Thanks man, appreciate the input and you don’t sound arrogant. We’re back now and, like you said, it wasn’t that scary. There were trying times, but that happens at home too, so it’s just a part of parenting. Yay!
