10 Tips From A Stay-At-Home Dad: Where I Stand

At over a year and a half of being a stay-at-home dad, I know I still have a lot to learn and experience. That said, I’ve also come a long from the first days of my at-home life. So, when I read a recent post on the Baby Center Blog title You’ll Love these 10 genius tips from a stay-at-home dad, I was mostly able to understand and relate to them.

First off, I’d like to say the stay-at-home dad of three is spot on with his advice, and I think any parent currently or considering staying at home would benefit from heeding his tips. They’re easy to incorporate (for the most part) and simple to understand, so I thought I would share them here along with where I stand for each one. Let’s get started, shall we?

stay-at-home, dad, mom, parent, advice, tip

Bam! Right off the bat my gut was twisting in guilt after reading this. But then I realized she’s not even 2 yet and we do get out of the house everyday for a walk around the neighborhood; sometimes even going over to one of her peers’ house too. Plus, grocery shopping happens at least once a week, so there’s that.

My wife made me feel better after I exposed my guilty feelings by letting me know right now it’s okay just to have fun at home while she’s younger and as she gets older, we’ll go and do more things. I can’t explain how heavily this was wearing on me, so a million thanks to my lovely wife for easing my angst!

I’m fairly good with this one. I can’t stand to leave a dirty spoon in the sink, so dishes are always done. I almost always have several food options in the fridge that I prepared because yes, you really never know what tomorrow will throw at you. I do know, however, that Avery will most likely throw some sort of food and/or drink at me or the floor each and every day. So, leave a cloth lying around and ready in every room, you’ll need it!

So true, and a big reason on why I vacuum every day. I also started “making” (just pulling the sheets up to make them straight) the bed for this reason. When you’re around the house all day, you just feel better if it looks better. Try it, if you aren’t already.

We can count on our hands and toes the amount of times Avery has watched TV, but I do let her watch YouTube videos on the iPad when eating lunch most days. She enjoys Sid the Science Kid the most, and I won’t lie, I like it too. Hmmm, I bet Bill Nye the Science Guy would be fun…..

This is a good one, and I have no problem here. Food, fitness, cars, reading, watching shows on Netflix, and unsolicited advice giving; I’m able to hold a conversation with most people on a multitude of topics . Of course, as an introvert, it’s not on a frequent basis, but it’s good to know anyway.

TAKE THIS TIP SERIOUSLY! I have been very bad about this and only now have I improved (I hope. Have I, dear?) and still need to work on it. This is very hard to follow since the working parent obviously misses the kid(s) and wants to spend time with them before bedtime, and by then, it may not leave much time before needing to get to sleep to start the day over again.

We can make excuses all day, but just a simple hug can work wonders. The power of touch and a few loving words goes a long way in showing appreciation and acknowledging one another.

Holy crap, yes! Get two! Make a big batch of oatmeal for breakfast in one and some sort of dinner/lunch in the other. I used to only cook something in the slow cooker on the weekends, but now it’s a daily thing. We all have a healthy and tasty (most of the time) meal to eat together and usually enough left over for Kelley’s work lunch and Avery to eat too. This is not a panacea for stress, but it sure does knock it down a good deal.

Yeah, that 45 minutes used to be 2 hours what seems like a long, long time ago. This me time is usually when I blog or just zone out looking food or fitness sites. I also stay up late when everyone is in bed just because it’s quiet and I can be alone in my thoughts. Of course, my sleep suffers, but I feel I need it too much to give up.

Fact. I can be bad about not sending pics to Going Mom while she’s working, but she’ll make sure to ask demand a cute pic when I fall behind. To add to this, Mondays can be the hardest, so have a pic or 10 ready to launch through the airwaves to her phone/computer the beginning of each week.

Hell yeah! There should be ZERO shame as an at-home parent. If you have any, lose it now, and remember your emotions can speak volumes to those little eyes that constantly watch you. My wife and I have to remind ourselves and each other of this all the time, but it’s true.

Staying at home full time is hard work, but don’t confuse it with being a job, because it’s not. Parenting is quite possibly the most important thing any of us will ever do, and therefore should be done with vigor and pride! This goes for the working and at-home parent, we’re all parents, and we all have wondering eyes on us learning from our actions.

I won’t say that I go through my slump days worrying about what the future holds as far as jobs are concerned or just about how the food I made that day looks unappealing (or is), but for the most part, I maintain my pride in what I do and definitely have no regrets. If it wasn’t for my wife going to work for our family, I’d be lost, and I’m forever grateful for what she’s doing for us to make it all happen.

Again, this is great advice for any stay-at-home parent, and as you can see, advice I still need to work on in some areas. But hey, just like most things in life, this is a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s best to remain steady and learn as you go.

Be sure to go to the actual article and read the comments for more advice and just some funny things people say.

The author of the article, Carolyn Robertson, asked what additional advice readers would give to a stay-at-home parent, so I’ll pass that question on to you. Leave your wisdom in the comments below, maybe it’ll help someone else, like me!

I Didn’t Have To Write This

Nope, not a single word or post is something I ever have to or had to do. Even when blogging for a campaign, the ultimate decision is always in my hands. Literally.

I recently signed up for and was accepted to participate in a paid campaign that I ended up turning down. I won’t go into details since I have full respect with the entities working with the brand, but if I were to take part, it would’ve taken a huge bite out of my integrity.

I politely declined the offer I selfishly signed up, apologizing for wasting time, and luckily there were no hard feelings, but I still felt bad for even putting myself out there in the first place. It was related to food, something I obviously have strong feelings about, and required me to buy some products. Anyway, nothing about it lined up with what I preach on nutrition, so I am just thankful there are no hard feelings.

But this made me think back to my original intention of even blogging in the first place. When I started, and even in my About page, I state how this blog is to detail my journey as a stay-at-home dad to Avery. I also mentioned that I’ll post on various topics related to healthy and fitness, which I have and do.

Along the way, I’ve been honored to have the opportunity for several great product reviews and become ambassador for a healthy food company, NuttZo, and awesome made-in-the USA minimal shoes, Soft Star Shotes. The products I reviewed and the companies I promote should all reflect my true beliefs, and so far they have. Now I just need to keep it that way!

There are times when I feel lost without a direction on where to go, in life and just in terms of blogging, but only because I over think everything. I stress about what I should make my hard-working wife for dinner each day even though she’s completely happy with black beans, sweet potato and steamed veggies……..and goat cheese of course. And then I get worked up on if I should use a freakin’ plate or bowl. C’mon, really, R.C.?!

Luckily, I have many friends in the blog-o-sphere that can relate and we are able to support each other as well as love from my friends and family around me. Especially my wife who is always supportive and helps keep me in check.

I’m always thinking when going on one of my several daily walks and I try to figure out just what direction to take the blog and future self. But that’s dumb. I have the most adorable little girl with me every day that I get to hang out with and raise to be a strong, healthy person who loves her Mommy and Daddy. That’s my #1 thing; period.

Blogging is and always will be a part of me, though, so it’s time to find a better way to keep true to my roots and not become a slave to what should be my solace.

I will still blog to my heart’s content on my views of health, fitness, and everything between, but want to try to keep it about the daily happenings here at home. I bring Avery to workout with me in the garage almost every day, and want to share that since each time should be cherished.

This blog is meant to be something I can look back on with my family and say “Oh yeah, I remember when we used to do that.” and smile. But no more treating this blog like a job I have to go to, that’s dumb.

There will always be a question of what I should write about, that goes with the territory, but at least I know to keep it simple and just write about life. So, to those reading, thank you, I hope you continue to enjoy the content I churn out and know that it’s my true feelings, campaign or not, all the time.

I’ll still participate in campaigns because we could all use a little extra cash and I have a dream car to save up for.

Kidding, I’ll have to win the lotto or find a high-paying job before I get another car. Since I don’t play the lotto and enjoy being and at-home dad too much, guess it will have to wait. It’s nice to look at though.

But then again, this is world’s better!

Look, she’s already wanting to help me bake something! Add my beautiful wife in the picture and that’s really all I need.

Again, thanks to all who read and hope you have a great week. See you soon to talk about what recently happened in the “Going” household. Hey, my butt is almost better! Cool, huh?

Do you ever get too wound up worrying over things that you should never fret about?

How do you manage stress? Or do you?

Screw You, Teething and Sickness!

We’ve gone a few weeks since our last torturous teething episode, so I guess we were due for another one eventually. It’s difficult to prepare for these things as we never know the severity of one teething incident to the next. but shrill crying is almost ALWAYS expected.

Okay, crying, drooling, change in eating habits, extra fussy, and tired are others to expect as well. But this time, Avery has been running a mild fever which, although common for teething, is never fun.

Is it actual sickness, or strictly from teething? All we can do is make the best guess from her body language, and looking in her mouth which is no easy feat!

It started on Wednesday where everything seemed normal in the morning. Avery shot me her mean face as I scurried to make her breakfast. She’s a demanding one, even shaking her fist!

I moved quick and fed her a fresh batch of NuttZo Banana Bread which helped turn her back into cute-face Avery.

We carried on with our day by going into the garage for a workout and then went on a walk/run with our Golden, Abby, around the neighborhood. We stopped at the neighborhood playground so Avery could romp around in her new Soft Star Shoes and, of course, proceed to remove all of the mulch from the playground.

I tried to turn it into a game to get all of the wood pieces back into the pit, but she didn’t care to play. After playing the antithesis of my game for 20 minutes, we strolled back home for lunch and naptime.

As I prepared lunch, Avery started acting odd by not being very vocal. I waived it off as just being tired after catching her doing the all-to-common eye rub.

But then, her mood turned and I could do nothing right. On top of that, after struggling to get her to eat something, a major teething symptom appeared….

Cranky slobber girl came out to play drive me insane! She took a few more bites of lunch and finally just straight up refused anything else. Since this is when I am trying to make my own lunch as well as dinner for Going Mom and myself, I threw what meal I could together and took Avery to get her down for a much needed nap.

She hasn’t fallen asleep in my arms for naptime in a long time (she does for my wife and that damn magic boob though!), but she was exhausted and fell into a slumber within 5 minutes. I laid her in her crib where she slept without a peep for almost 2 hours. Another oddity as of late.

I had high hopes that after getting some rest, she’d be all honky dory again. And when she flashed a grin like this right upon waking, I felt we were in the clear.

Smiling After Naptime

We went to the kitchen for some water and a snack before going on another walk. The first sign that she was still not her usual self shined through as she held her sippy cup while rocking her crazy after naptime hair. Her face makes it obvious that something is not right. But, still freakin’ cute, huh?

On top of this, Avery felt very warm and still was having trouble eating anything. I gave her small bite of chewy chestnut which she usually eats pretty well, but she kept that thing in her mouth for a solid 20 minutes! Yep, one little chestnut and she held it there like a Russian hamster (that’s for you and Hammy, Gary!) hoarding its food.

Those cheeks!!

Once Going Mom came home from work, she took Avery’s temperature and confirmed she had a mild fever of around 100°F. The rest of the evening was spent with Avery going back and forth from happy to crying, to pissed at the world, to “lights” (she stops everything to point up at lights), and back all over again.

After dinner (another struggle) and a bath, Kelley nursed Avery to sleep where she didn’t make a sound all night. The good thing about this is that it broke a 4 day streak of her pooping after going to sleep, the bad thing is that this meant she must really feel bad.

The next day, Avery woke up with her fever gone and in a seemingly chipper mood. Kelley sent a text asking how she was and not seeing signs of fussiness or difficulty eating, I said all was well. During our morning workout, I sent her a pic of Avery swinging her kettlebell as if peace had been restored.

Avery Swinging Kettlebell

Silly me, I was so WRONG! We went to Sprouts after our usual walk/run and while wearing her inside the store, the cranky slobber girl returned!

Her cries radiated throughout the aisles as I quickly tried to remember why the hell I even came to the store. My memory returned and I grabbed what we needed (and some of what we didn’t need) and drove back home.

For the next hour, Avery sat at my feet, crying loudly, as I tried to feed her and rush around the kitchen to put meals together. Poor kid, I tried holding her and pacing around and could feel the heat radiating off of her body again.

She wouldn’t eat much, but drank water and more breast milk than she’s had in a while. Avery fell asleep in my arms again, and I’m positive I could’ve played the trumpet in her face and she would remain asleep. Don’t worry, I don’t have a trumpet, and I’d probably just end up spitting into the thing without a sound being produced.

My loving wife dropped everything the second she got home and I told her the fever was back and took our happy girl away. Avery simply would not allow us to stop holding her. Kelley held her for the rest of the day as I cleaned and prepared dinner. But dinner was not had as Kelley just wanted to get Avery to sleep and held her as she nursed the poor girl to sleep.

It was a sad, quiet night, with this being the first fever-induced sickness we’ve experienced with Avery. Her temp got up to 102°F and her eyes were heavy all evening. At least Going Mom and I took the requisite parent with sick kid selfie and posted to social media.

Avery Sick with Mommy

After laying her in the crib, Kelley came out to eat dinner with me and we tried to watch a Walking Dead episode. Not 5 minutes into it though, we see Avery just sitting up in her crib. Silent, but just sitting there as her body slowly waved around.

After another 5 minutes of her still sitting, we went in and discovered problem, she threw up. I managed the sheet changing and diaper getting duty while Kelley cleaned Avery and changed her clothes. Kelley once again held Avery to comfort her to sleep as I came out to write this post. We decided to postpone watching zombies for the night since parenting comes first. Oh, and it’s on Netflix so we can play catch-up after Avery is well again!

Maybe I’ll happily report she’s back to her old self flashing smiles and eating better in my next post. Fingers crossed!

How do/did your kids handle the woes of teething?

Were they sudden or gradual signs?
