I'm an ex-mutual fund accountant who left the cubicle world to be a stay-at-home dad to my beautiful little girl, Avery, who entered our life on 11/15/13 and handsome little boy, Wes, who joined our family on 11/19/17. Also happily married to my wife, Kelley, as of 8/17/07. Sorry ladies... :) Fitness and nutrition is of the utmost importance in our family and we strive to reflect this in our daily life. I always prepare our meals at home and only go out if it's a special occasion, and even then I tend to not get much. Food should be fun and a joy to eat, not something quickly consumed from a fast food chain or scarf down before the next meeting. I have come from strictly logging high miles to train for the next marathon to keeping exercise varied and focusing more on strength. I still enjoy going for a run when I can, but nothing crazy, and I prefer hill sprints while pushing my daughter, Avery in the stroller. She loves it and I get a great workout! I want to show the world how to appreciate their body and feed it real, wholesome food while moving more throughout the day. In doing so, everyone would be healthier, happier, and we'd all live in a better place as a result. I blog mainly about my life as a stay-at-home dad and frequently include reviews, participate in campaigns, and share my thoughts on fitness and nutrition. If you ever have any questions or thoughts to share, please reach out as I'm always open to listening or helping others however possible. That is, when I have free time since Avery is and my wife are the number one priorities!

Soft Star Shoes RunAmoc Moc3: An Active Dad’s Review

I’ve been wearing minimalist shoes for over 5 years now and will never go back to cushioned unstability shoes again. Vibram Five Fingers or New Balance Minimus have been my shoes of choice, but since the kind folks “Elves” at Soft Star Shoes sent me a pair of their RunAmoc Moc3 barefoot running shoes to review, I have a new favorite.

DSC_1470

Here a few key details on the running “moccasins”:

Soft Star RunAmocs

– Superior flexibility and ground-feel.
– They weigh less than 5oz!
– Breathe-O-Prene® liners wicks moisture and keeps dust and dirt away!
– Genuine leather uppers, perforated for breathability.
– Zero drop 2mm Vibram® soling.
– Can be worn with or without socks.
– Extremely odor resistant.
– Reflective strips for nighttime safety.
– Handcrafted in Oregon, USA.
– See more by clicking this link.

Although they’re marketed as barefoot running shoes/moccasins, the RunAmoc Moc3’s are perfect for so much more. Lifting weights, walking, high intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise, chasing crazy toddlers, tasks around the house, shopping, and, when your kid lets you, relaxing.

I hear that last one is nice, but Avery has yet to allow this thing called “relaxing”. However, the shoes helped me block her path of destruction when they stopped her in her tracks to take a closer look.

DSC_0918

The Moc3’s instantly appealed to me since they are slip-on and as minimal as you can get without just actually being barefoot. Give me a slip on shoe, I’m happy, but give me a high quality slip shoe made for performance, I’m ecstatic! And that’s exactly what the Soft Star RunAmoc Moc3 offers.

Looks

At first, they looked a little funky to me, but as I studied them longer…they still looked funky. It’s true, they’re basically an upgraded sock, but that’s what I love about them. Even compared to the Vibram Five Fingers, the Moc3’s just tend to grab more attention.

DSC_0913

Maybe because they look as if they are some sort of business casual shoe when you first see them, but then you notice you can see the person’s toes poking through the thin leather uppers. Not to mention how thin the whole shoe looks/is.

DSC_0915

The looks have actually grown on me, and I’m completely happy with their design. Besides, barefoot/minimal shoes aren’t meant to fit in and they shouldn’t, they deserve to stand out from the rest!

Fit and Feel

No half sizes here, but for the Moc3’s I recommend you round down from your regular shoe size. I usually wear a 10 1/2 and got the size 10 Moc3 which still had some room inside. Note that these shoes can be worn with or without socks, and wearing socks can make your foot slip around more than if you were barefoot. I tried both ways and prefer going without socks as the shoes hug my feet better and don’t slip.

Whether you have socks or not, the shoes slip on easily and are extremely comfortable. I love being able to feel the ground beneath me, and the RunAmoc Moc3’s allow me to do just that. It’s almost therapeutic to walk or run in the grass when wearing these shoes since you can feel the blades under your feet with every step.

At less than 5oz, it truly is as if you’re just wearing some thick socks. But since they’re handmade by Elves who are actually passionate about what they do, you don’t have to worry about getting any holes like you would socks! My feet feel free in the shoes, and they basically are with their soft yet sturdy construction.

DSC_1833

Performance

These shoes are rock stars! I may not be running high mileage like back in my marathon days, but know that I could in the Moc3’s if I wanted. Instead, I’ve gone on daily long walks and runs with Avery and even incorporated “stroller hill sprints” in the shoes.

DSC_1552

The Moc3’s offer the best barefoot running experience I’ve ever had, hands down. Even the Vibram Five Fingers seem less minimal after wearing the Soft Stars. Don’t get me wrong, I still like and enjoy the “VFF’s”, but Soft Star is my new go-to shoe.

I tried running with and without socks, and prefer no socks the best. When I did wear socks, my feet would slide around and the heel would slip every so often like they were going to come off. Without socks, the shoes hug my feet better and feel more like they are just a part of me, not something loosely attached to the end of my limbs.

Running is a liberating movement, and the Moc3’s allow me to take things a step (ha ha) further by making everyday activities liberating too. Like, for instance weightlifting.

DSC_1654

When lifting weights, ideally we would be barefoot to connect better with the ground and be more stable. Think of all of the cushioning on standard shoes like standing on pillows when trying to squat heavy weight. The end result would NOT be pretty!

Thankfully, the zero drop, super flexible, and high quality construction of the Moc3’s make them perfect for any weightlifting session. I normally wear a minimal shoe with a 4mm drop, and after lifting in the Moc3’s, I could feel my leg muscles activating more which surprised me at first. I didn’t think it would be a big difference, but these are now the only shoes I’ll use on leg day.

DSC_1364

The Vibram soles provide plenty of traction which comes in handy when performing any of the Olympic lifts or HIIT exercises. CrossFit type of workouts is another area where the shoes shine as their grip and light weight instill confidence from kettlebell swings to burpees, to box jumps.

DSC_1548

Durability

I’ve worn the Moc3’s for several weeks now, and never wore any other shoes in that time besides when it was raining. Side note: the ultra minimal nature of these shoes means they are not water resistant, so they WILL NOT absorb water when stepping in puddles. I found out the hard way, but they do dry out and clean up easily!

In wearing these shoes all day every day where I spend most time on my feet, going for walks/runs with Avery, cooking in the kitchen, playing on the playground, lifting weights, and performing high intensity interval training, the shoes still look great! I managed to scrape my toes going over an obstacle when running, and all I have is a scuff, but besides that, these things hold up well!

DSC_1824

Seriously, it’s hardly noticeable. After dealing with stitching coming undone on my Vibram Five Fingers, I am completely happy with how well the Soft Stars are constructed and absolutely love that they are handmade right here in the U.S.A!

Summary

Their light weight, high durability, and zero drop are key factors making the Soft Star RunAmoc Moc3’s my new favorite shoe. The fact that they’re slip-on is what I love, but can see this being a drawback to some wanting a more snug fit. That said, ditch your socks and you should be just fine.

I love how you can feel so much under your feet in these and it makes me feel more connected to the earth. Call me a hippie if you want, but nothing compares besides actually going barefoot…..just beware of sharp objects! Being able to quickly slip these shoes on to go workout or just go to the local coffee shop makes them perfect for anyone looking to get a minimal shoe that is multi-functional. Oh, and, absolutely necessary for any parent with little ones running around!

Soft Star Kids Shoes

As a Soft Star Shoes Ambassador, I’ll be talking more about these shoes for a while. I have confirmed I love them for myself, but they also make children’s shoes by hand and I’m thinking Avery needs to have herself a pair soon! Check out all they have to offer on their site and have fun with the create your own feature.

Hopefully this review will have you ordering your first pair soon and you’ll be opening a package to find this glorious sticker with your new foot huggers carefully wrapped inside.

I Love My Microwave Omelet Maker + WIAW #4

How often do you use the microwave? I use it daily and it almost always involves my Microwave Omelet Maker. Not for omelets, but to make bread. Say what?!

I know, it sounds weird to me just reading it out loud, but it works so well! It’s similar to the fairly popular “Microwave Mug Cakes” that started popping up a few years ago, just cooked in an omelet maker. Here’s mine..

DSC_1414

This handy little kitchen tool is in the top 5 things I use every day. Right up there with the knife and my titanium spork! The breads I make vary depending on what’s left of my overnight oats mixture from the day before.

You see, I can inhale a container of plain Greek yogurt in 2 days, no problem. Once it’s almost empty, I use it to make different variations of overnight oats using oats (duh), peanut flour, plant protein powder, shredded coconut, chia seeds, greens powder, and stevia.

Instead of breakfast, I have these concoctions as treats/2nd dinner at night and maybe some after lunch, which is typically my first meal of the day. When the mixture is low, I then use it as my base to make a bread.

Confused? Let me run you through a typical cycle, starting with my almost empty container of Greek yogurt.

DSC_1389

From there, I fill it back up with all kinds of goodness. This one got mashed ripe banana….

DSC_1393

….oats….

DSC_1394

…..peanut flour, stevia, and chia seeds….

DSC_1401

…..along with a mix of water and almond milk to bring it all together.

DSC_1405

Basically, peanut butter banana overnight oats, and they’re awesome! What’s not awesome is when everything goes back down and I’m almost out of the peanut buttery goodness. But, no worries, this is when I make bread!

Since chocolate pairs perfectly with peanut butter and banana, I add unsweetened raw cocao powder to the dwindling oat mixture.

DSC_1395

I also add more peanut flour, sometimes coconut flour, and sometimes oat flour along with baking powder, more stevia, and egg whites to bring it all together.

DSC_1413

I find a butter knife to work best for my stirring needs and use it every time. It’s even handy for scraping every last bit of the delicious batter into my greased omelet cooker.

DSC_1417

I never have an exact microwave time, but have been doing anywhere from 6:30 to 7:15 depending on how full each side is. And then viola!!

DSC_1418

I have two half-moons of peanut butter banana chocolate bread. And it’s healthy at that! Plus, Avery, my our 16 month old, loves everything I make. I just cut it up into bites for her…

DSC_1420

….and she snatches them out of my hand as if I might take it back if she’s not quick enough.

One for me, none for you, dad.
One for me, none for you, dad.

And that’s that. I’ll have another full container of yogurt that will go down fast and I’ll repeat the process. Maybe with pumpkin puree, applesauce, or just extra oats and chia seeds.

If you haven’t used one, I say give it a try. It’s also great at making omelets if you’re wondering. Like this sweet potato and spinach NuttZo omelet.

With that, lets move on to WIAW. Thanks to Jenn, for hosting this fun link-up for foodies everywhere!

*Update*: this week’s WIAW is actually being hosted by Meg over on her cool blog, Clean Eats, Fast Feets. Head on over and see what all the other foodies have on their plates for the week!

what I ate wednesday, WIAW

Mornings are pretty minimal with food intake for me, but Avery is always ready to go right when she wakes up. I try to wake up before her to at least have a batch of my microwave bread made and ready for her, but sometimes she has to wait. I’ll have a quick shot of matcha green tea powder followed by a giant cup of coffee while Avery downs some of mommy’s milk.

DSC_1463

I finally have the bread ready for Avery. Today it’s a protein pumpkin bread that she happily gobbles up.

DSC_1803

I just ordered these organic chestnuts from Amazon (a freaking case of 24 packs!) on a whim and have been snacking on them during the day. Avery even enjoys them, although it takes her a while to chew one.

DSC_1611

This is my first time to have chestnuts, and luckily I enjoy them. They’re great roasted (yes, on an open fire), as is, or mixed into salads. I like them with tuna or chicken salad for a cool new texture.

Lunch is a big bowl of steamed veggies with black beans and green onions on top. Oh yeah, and always plenty of cayenne; I like to sweat!

DSC_0961

Since I was still hungry, I snacked on a few different pieces of microwave bread, some brazil nuts, and raw celery and carrots.

DSC_0590 (2)

Yes, I’m using the lid of a bowl to double as a plate. Hey, it works, right?

Dinner, my biggest meal(s) of the day, started with salmon salad with steamed beets and broccoli, black garlic, celery, and 2 versions of my homemade sauerkraut. One was in a beet juice mixture and the other was infused with dill. I’ll let you guess which was which. 🙂

DSC_1962

Round 2 involved a kale banana smoothie with the leftover slices of pumpkin bread Avery didn’t eat.

DSC_0740

DSC_1804

I want my daughter to eat and all, but is it bad when I secretly hope she won’t finish everything just so I can have some too? Hope I’m not alone here!

Hope you have a great rest of the week! Happy Hump Day!

Do you have a special way of using your almost empty containers like yogurt?

Are you a fan of overnight oats?

Have you ever “baked” bread in the microwave?

Aaaannnnnddd, before I go, I have to let you know that if you’re a peanut butter lover, you NEED to try NuttZo if you haven’t already! Plus, if you go to their website and enter code liley15, you can save 15% off your order. 😉

BYOB with King Kong in Venice on Date Night

It’s a little known fact that King Kong happened happened to be in Venice at the same time Claude Monet was visiting. Yep, apparently as Monet was painting the famous Sunset in Venice while looking out from his room in the Hotel Brittania, the Italian Armed Forces were closing in on the giant ape.

sunset-in-venice

It was at this time, Monet was losing his eyesight from gray cataracts, so it’s hard to tell in his original painting. Maybe King Kong was on the other side of the church at the time. Who knows for sure? So there’s your history lesson for the day; you’re welcome.

Just like our last painting date, BYOB with Jellyfish on Date Night, my lovely wife and I went to Texas U Can Paint to recreate Monet’s Venice masterpiece while enjoying a few drinks. And, just like before, I chose scotch with Zevia for my drink of choice and Kelley had red wine.

We also had G-Ma watching Avery both times too. Thank you, G-Ma! It was only a couple hours, but man was it nice to be out and away with just my wife. You never realized how much you miss your spouse until you get some alone time with them.

Parenting is awesome, don’t get me wrong, but we need to make sure we make time for each other more often too. It’s vital for a healthy, happy relationship! Plus, I don’t make enough time to appreciate my beautiful wife who obviously deserves so much more than I give sometimes.

Kelley_Painting Date Night

Seriously, she make me smile…..a lot!

Our painting subject seemed simple enough, but like most artsy things go (for me at least), looks can be deceiving. Alcohol doesn’t help. We started off okay making brush strokes along with the instructor as we took sips of our drinks in between.

The sips caught up to us fast, and both of our paintings started to stray from the instructor’s as we took to filling in the city and its shadows on the river. But no worries, this is when I “remembered” King Kong was being tracked down in Venice and was actually hanging on the church across the water from Monet’s hotel room.

Poor Monet, losing his eyesight at such an exciting time is real shame. Working against the instructor’s guidance, I decided to help bring to life what Monet had missed on that beautiful evening; King Kong going face to face with a tank.

Monet with King Kong

Kelley gives it one thumb up. I’ll take it! I think my King Kong looks a little like a black Homer Simpson though, don’t you?

King Kong Close-Up

Painting aside, Kelley and I enjoyed our short time alone (with a big group of people), and both agree it needs to happen more often. Luckily, I was the winner of a gift card to come back for another paint class, so looks we need to plan another creative night together soon!

Date Night Monet Paintings

Maybe next time I’ll recreate that time Pablo Picasso was inspired by Godzilla’s destruction in one of his many cubist artworks. Not sure, but we’ll see.

It was short, but time with my wife is priceless. Thank you, G-Ma for watching our little hellion girl for our date night! And thank you, wife, for being you and all that you do to make our lifestyle work!

Do you ever go too long without spending time alone with just your loved one?

What places do you like to go together? Or is staying at home preferred?

Are you a fan of art?
