I'm an ex-mutual fund accountant who left the cubicle world to be a stay-at-home dad to my beautiful little girl, Avery, who entered our life on 11/15/13 and handsome little boy, Wes, who joined our family on 11/19/17. Also happily married to my wife, Kelley, as of 8/17/07. Sorry ladies... :) Fitness and nutrition is of the utmost importance in our family and we strive to reflect this in our daily life. I always prepare our meals at home and only go out if it's a special occasion, and even then I tend to not get much. Food should be fun and a joy to eat, not something quickly consumed from a fast food chain or scarf down before the next meeting. I have come from strictly logging high miles to train for the next marathon to keeping exercise varied and focusing more on strength. I still enjoy going for a run when I can, but nothing crazy, and I prefer hill sprints while pushing my daughter, Avery in the stroller. She loves it and I get a great workout! I want to show the world how to appreciate their body and feed it real, wholesome food while moving more throughout the day. In doing so, everyone would be healthier, happier, and we'd all live in a better place as a result. I blog mainly about my life as a stay-at-home dad and frequently include reviews, participate in campaigns, and share my thoughts on fitness and nutrition. If you ever have any questions or thoughts to share, please reach out as I'm always open to listening or helping others however possible. That is, when I have free time since Avery is and my wife are the number one priorities!

Strength Training Is The Secret To Healthier Joints

We have multiple joints all throughout our bodies. The technical definition of a joint is that it is where two bones meet one another. Some of our joints are more well-known than others – like the knee, hip, ankle, and shoulder joints. We need joints to help us move around and perform specific tasks.

For example, did you know that the way our thumb joint works allows us to have opposable thumbs? This means we can grip things with our thumbs, which basically sets us apart from chimps!

Anyway, back to the main point!

Joints are essential, but they are often injured. The more moveable joints in your body (the ones mentioned earlier) are prone to get damaged in multiple ways. You can twist the joint and damage the ligaments, you can get arthritis, you can dislocate them, etc. Joint pain stops you from doing many of your daily tasks and can cause problems in your life. While the chances of suffering from joint pain increases as you age, you can easily prevent it. You deserve to have healthy joints, and it is highly possible when you try strength training.

What is strength training?

For those that don’t know, strength training is basically training your muscles to get bigger and stronger. Typically, this means you start lifting weights. As you keep lifting, your muscles adapt to the load and get stronger. By progressively increasing the weights, you will get harder muscles that look bigger and can handle more weight.

Why does strength training help your joints?

Some of you might have heard that weight training is bad for your joints. I’ll forgive this as it seems like it should be the case. Surely it’s not good for your joints to add lots of extra force to them? As long as your form is correct, then your joints will be fine.

In fact, they will benefit in the short and long-term from exercise and strength training.

Look at the knee joint – probably the most prone to injuries. If you took a look at all the different knee injury cases, you’d find many happen in slip and fall incidents where the knee twists. Twisting your knee is preventable through strength training. How? Because building strength in the muscles around the knee will also strengthen the ligaments and tendons that hold the joint together. In essence, you reinforce the supporting structures. This adds more stability to the joint, preventing it from twisting easily.

The same goes for other joints in your body – if you strengthen the attaching muscles, then the joint itself becomes more stable and less prone to injuries.

Furthermore, one of the short-term benefits of strength training is that it increases the synovial fluid in joints. Think of this as oil for a gate. Joints need this fluid to move smoothly and prevent bones from rubbing against one another. Exercise and strength training increases the production of this, greasing your joints up nicely. In turn, this can prevent diseases like arthritis from forming!

You see, strength training is the ultimate solution to healthier joints. If you want to live with less pain and more stability, then pick up some weights and protect your joints today.

Using Self-Isolation To Change Your Look

One positive thing we can say about the COVID-19 pandemic is that it’s forcing a lot of stressed-out people to slow down and re-think their priorities. If you’ve been postponing essentials activities and projects before COVID, you’ve got no excuse to delay things any further. For busy dads, life before self-isolation could have been too hectic to take the time for self-care. Ultimately, if you’re working full-time or juggling tight deadlines, you might find yourself neglecting your appearance as a result of stress pressure. That’s where life under lockdown can give you the opportunity to shift your focus and transform your self-care routine once and for all. Are you ready to come out of self-isolation as a different man?

Straighten that crooked smile

Most people tend to postpone major aesthetic improvements indefinitely.

I don’t have time for that.

People will notice.

It’s a long process.

However, you can use your time at home to finally focus on issues that have been affecting your self-esteem. A crooked smile, for instance, is one of the most complaint tooth complaints in America. Straightening your teeth is an involved process. Many adults are reluctant to wear braces to achieve the perfect smile of their dreams. However, not all braces are created equal. Fastbraces, for instance, can allow you to transform your teeth in under 120 days. You could come out of self-isolation with a brand new smile!

Start a skincare routine

Stress, lack of time, and hectic routines make it tricky to manage your skincare regime. However, looking after your skin is not just for women. On the contrary, men’s skin requires just as much attention to tackle common issues and slow down signs of aging. You can make the most of your time at home to look after your skin and invest in the right products. A cleanser can help to reduce oily build-ups – which are prone to happen when you stay indoors. Additionally, investing in an exfoliant and a face mask can help improve your complexion.

No gym? No problem

Can you lose weight under lockdown? The answer is yes. More importantly, you can look after your body and build muscle. You can find plenty of home workouts to help you stay toned and active when the gym is shut. Ideally, you should exercise at least 4 to 5 times a day to strengthen not only your muscles but also your immune system. If you’ve been struggling with an unwanted bulge around your midriff – unfortunately, a common issue for desk jobs –, seize the opportunity to melt it down!

Try out new styles

When was your last barber’s appointment? Chances are that the time for a haircut has come. But, with barbers’ shops being shut, you need to be creative. Why not experiment with your look while you can. Let your hair grow. Grow a beard. Try out new shaving styles. You might find it fun to discover new looks that work on you. Besides, daily shavers can also give their skin a rest.

A self-care routine is going to see you through the pandemic self-isolation. For a lot of people, improving your appearance can be detrimental to your mental focus. Not only does it give you something to be excited about, but it also gives new meaning to your life under lockdown. So what are you doing today to change your look?

Managing to Stay Healthy Whilst being a Parent

Your body is amazing, but to keep it amazing we need to make sure we keep it healthy and give it a check over every now and again. This can especially difficult if you happen to be a parent. From making sure the children get to school on time. Making sure their homework is completed, to bath time and feeding them, and all the other things that come by default when you are a parent. It can seem impossible to have some me time, but it doesn’t have to be! This article helps show you how and what you can do to keep yourself healthy and give yourself that much needed me time, a survival kit for new dads, and mothers out there!

Maintain a Healthy Diet

A key element to health is your diet. Being a parent, it can be difficult to make sure you eat healthily whilst also trying to regulate what the children are eating! Some people opt for highly regimented diets, which may not work around your family life. This is not the only way you can diet, maybe you just want to remove the snacks from your life. The food on the go. Studies have shown that regimented times of eating, having the three main meals of the day at the same time every day really helps with weight loss. Combine that with removing the on the move food and snacks in between, and replacing them with nuts, fruit, and salad, will make you into a health and diet ninja!

Try to use Natural Products

This is a must. Many products out on the market are actually quite harsh and harmful to your skin. Some products use alcohol and other chemicals as a base ingredient, and in time these chemicals will actually dry and age your skin, so they are not the best. Products that have a natural base of ingredients are far better for your skin, and due to the rise in popularity and the demand high for natural products they no longer need to break your bank!

Adapt an exercise plan for you

When looking at exercise routines to follow, either through an app or TV or at the gym through classes, everyone has their ‘top routine’ or ‘best routine’ that is bound to work every time. Well, this is not the case for everyone. A highly regimented exercise routine may not suit a working or single mother or a mother in the first place who needs to care for the children. It may not take into account personal conditions or situations which do not affect the person recommending the routine. Why not try a gym?

Don’t forget to Nourish the Entire Body

This point links with the above, never forget the rest of your body! Many people have their focus set on face creams, eye primers, face masks and more, and never really think twice about products that could help the skin on the rest of their body. The face is just a small part of the skin that covers your body, and there are many amazing products out there for the body as well as the face! As well as body butter that is amazing, you can buy affordable body oils which are also great for adding moisture to the skin. Also, natural body soaps are great for the bath or shower, so when you are washing the day away, at the same time giving your skin much-needed refreshment and leaving you feeling happier and more relaxed!

Using Your Senses as you Exercise

This is another great tip to get the most of the workout you do already, but adding another element of mindfulness into the mix. An example of how you could use this method in your normal routine is your morning run in the park. Are you playing music through your headphones? Are you just focused on the end goal of when you finish or where the next bench is? That is perfectly normal, as we all have those same thoughts. But, image that same run, but you really turn into the noises around you. The morning birds tweeting in the trees. The wind blowing through the hanging branches of the trees around you, and the noise of the rhythmic thud and gravel noise when your feet touch the ground every couple seconds. Although it sounds really basic and simple, firstly, it is! But at the same time, you will find again like the breathing techniques, you will slow down and really take in your environment, and get so much more satisfaction from your workout.

So, those are some quick tips on keeping healthy whilst being a parent! Do what is best for you, and keep doing a great job!
