Naturepedic Ultra Breathable 2-Stage Organic Crib Mattress Review

Comfort is an important feature to look for when shopping for a new mattress, but there are many other elements to consider, especially when it’s a crib mattress for our babies. Whether they’re sleeping, reading, playing (this includes jump-reading), babies and toddlers spend 10-14 hours a day on their bed. This makes a mattress one of the most important objects in a child’s environment as their brain and bodies constantly grow.

Conventional mattresses are made with chemicals and materials like vinyl/PVC, flame retardants, polyurethane foam, phthalates, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and formaldehyde. These things emit toxic gases called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are linked to causing short- and long-term adverse health effects. After learning about everything in conventional mattresses, it wasn’t long before we welcomed Naturepedic into our home.

Fast forward several months and our growing girl was ready to transition from her crib to a big kid bed. There was no question we wanted her sleeping on a Naturepedic mattress so she could enjoy a #SafeHealthySleep like Mommy and Daddy. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to review one of their kids mattresses, the 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra/Quilted Mattress.

After we found out we were having baby number two, there was no doubt that we wanted him sleeping on a Naturepedic organic crib mattress. In exchange for my honest review, Naturepedic kindly sent us their Ultra Breathable 2-Stage Organic Crib Mattress.

Since it arrived before Wes was born, big sis, being an experienced Naturepedic user (sleeper-on-er?), tested it out for her baby brother.

Just looking at the mattress, it’s easy to see the care and attention  put into each one. Made right here in the U.S.A by skilled Amish craftsmen, each mattress is built with pride and durability.

The mattress is firm, flat and seamless with a breathable mattress pad making it super safe for babies. The pad helps keep baby cool which reduces overheating while sleeping. It’s built with square corners, to ensure a snug crib fit. organic crib mattressThe mattress is completely waterproof and comes with a built-in dust mite/bed bug barrier. When combined, the mattress and breathable pad provides a comfortable, luxurious sleep environment free of flame retardants and other chemicals.

We all know our babies grow up too fast, but the Ultra Breathable 2-Stage Organic Crib Mattress will stay with them into the toddler years. One side is firmer for infants, and  for toddlers the other side is a little less firm. As a “big girl”, Avery made sure to point out that her baby brother will need the Infant Side at first.

We were a bit nervous when the time came to get Wes to sleep on his Naturepedic mattress.

Will he be too hot?

Maybe he’ll be too cold?

Would it be a good sleep?

Will he even sleep at all?!

Sleep aside, we knew we were laying him on a certified organic mattress that does not contaminate the nursery air with toxic chemicals like other mattresses made with polyurethane foam and/or vinyl.

So, how does he like it? Here’s a hint….

Yeah, he likes loves his crib. And obviously his bunny too.

It’s hard to believe this dark-haired boy is the same, but that smile confirms it is.

From the start, our little boy has been enjoying a #safehealthysleep on his Naturepedic mattress. Going Mom and I both feel confident that he’s getting quality sleep and is in a completely safe environment when sleeping…… or not…

Naturepedic 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra Kids’ Mattress: More Than Just Comfort

When shopping for a mattress, the level of comfort is probably what most of us think of first. But, there’s more to consider in a mattress than just comfort. Take, for example, the Naturepedic 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra/Quilted Kids’ Mattress.

I had the pleasure of receiving Naturepedic’s EOS Series mattress to review a few months ago, and have been enjoying a #SafeHealthySleep ever since. Going Mom and I loved the EOS so much that we felt a bit guilty we didn’t have such a high quality mattress for Avery.

We had an organic crib mattress, but it was time to transition from the crib which meant we needed a bigger and “bedder” mattress. Turns out, the kind folks at Naturepedic liked me enough to work allow me the opportunity to review one of their kids’ versions, the 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra/Quilted Mattress.

Excitement beamed from Avery’s face when we told her about her new big girl bed, and we matched her happy face from the comfort in knowing she’d be getting a superior organic cotton mattress. Their organic cotton is much healthier than the synthetic fabrics and foams commonly found in other mattresses. It’s also made without flame retardants and questionable chemicals like vinyl/PVC, phthalates, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and formaldehyde. It’s ultra clean, ultra pure, and free from allergens like wool and latex.

With a host of certifications and awards like being certified by the OTCO to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and meeting the GREENGUARD Gold Certification standard, Naturepedic leaves nothing to worry about when bringing their products into your home. Even the packaging from delivery produces no off-gassing, vapors, or chemicals. An important aspect to consider when you have excited tots waiting to give it a warm welcome.

Just like she did upon the arrival of our EOS Series Organic Mattress. But now she was hugging her very own big girl mattress, which she made certain to let us know……a lot.

The 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra is a versatile mattress that is made to last many years as your child grows from a tiny tot to a big kid. It looks good too!

On the top, the mattress features an organic cotton waterproof fabric that’s easy to clean and so pure it even meets food contact standards. When your child is in potty training mode (or you’re just not that sure yet), the waterproof side is the perfect choice!

On the bottom side, you’ll find a luxuriously quilted organic cotton fabric that’s perfect for older, “mature” kids. This side is not waterproof, but offers a more comfortable sleeping surface that older kids and adults will appreciate.

From the start, we used the quilted side since Avery was mostly potty trained. The comfort level was evident by the disappearance of my wife most nights of the week following the 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra.

She usually lays down to sing with Avery at bedtime, and would end up dozing off, usually before Avery. This happened on occasion in the past, but it the occurrence increased twofold. Lately, she’s started leaving the room earlier so as to not make it a habit. Thankfully, Avery feels right at home in the Naturepedic 2 in 1 and doesn’t mind sleeping solo. If anything, I’d say she’s rather proud and enjoys the extra room.

And we’re proud of being able to provide a high quality mattress for our precious little girl. Naturepedic’s statement, Babies and toddlers spend 10-14 hours a day sleeping and playing on a crib mattress. As such, for the first few years of a child’s life, the mattress is the single most prominent object in the child’s environment. “ further supports how happy we are to have their mattresses in our home.

Your child’s, as well as your own, health and safety should be non-negotiable. Naturepedic knows this all too well and follows a list of priorities making them stand out from the rest:

Priority #1: No harmful chemicals.

Priority #2: No allergenic materials.

Priority #3: Natural, organic and renewable materials wherever possible.

Priority #4: Practical design (e.g. easy-to-clean waterproof cover).

Priority #5: Third party independent testing and verification.

Many of us consider of a mattress as just a place to sleep, but a kids’ mattress, as well as an adult’s, is used more than we think. It’s a perfect platform for dancing in your undies….

Naturepedic offers a comfortable sleep and play environment for not just our sweetheart, but for us, her parents, who love playing and sleeping with her too. I haven’t had the privilege of spending half the night with Avery (yet), but she did wake up crying early one morning and I laid back down with her for a while. I could’ve easily fallen asleep and had to take back all the times I gave Going Mom grief for dozing off.

Avery still gets excited to sleep in her”Naturepedic bed.” every night, and as you can see from the pictures, it offers plenty of joy no matter the time of day.

Crib to Bed to Floor & A Cold Pool

We made the transition from crib to bed a week ago with mixed feelings about how our two and half year old girl would take to the change. It wasn’t a huge change since we have a convertible crib, so it just took a little rearranging/removal of the existing crib parts.

Still the same organic mattress she’s had since birth, but we’ll be upgrading to a brand new full-size Naturepedic mattress in a few weeks. Stay tuned for a review of their top notch mattresses for kids. Safe sleeping material is more important than I ever knew before I read up on how vital it really is.

I made the switch right before naptime with high expectations that Avery would put on a good show through the baby monitor. Much to my surprise, she was excited to get in her big kid bed to read a story before nap time, and never even got off of her mattress after I left. I could see her thinking about it through the monitor, but in less time than she usually takes to finally fall asleep, she was out quick.

Such a precious girl. When she’s out, she’s out! Hence the reason I was able to get such a close shot as she slept. Of course, I couldn’t stop there, this moment called for a daddy-daughter selfie, even if she didn’t know it was happening.

The first night went quite well too. She took longer to actually fall asleep, but still kept on her bed the entire time. The next day she started to test the waters more and more and got on and off the bed before finally giving in. Every night since, she’ll wander around her room, put stuffed animals we said were too big back on her bed, and sing aloud restlessly before she sleeps.

Despite wandering all over her room, which I suspect is normal at this stage, she has taken to the freedom of her big kid bed really well. Going Mom, on the other hand is a little more reluctant for the change. Gone are the days of rocking our little baby to sleep as she sings to her, Avery now demands we read to her in her bed and refuses getting rocked. They grow so fast is a cliche saying we find ourselves repeating several times a day. As always, it’s bittersweet.

Apparently, sleeping on her mattress is bittersweet as well. A couple nights in a row, I peeked at the monitor in the middle of the night/early morning to find Avery nowhere in sight. Naturally, I go to check on our missing tot to find her on the floor. No blankets, just face down with legs curled or stretched out. The first night I quickly moved her back to her bed, but the second night, I had to capture the moment first.

Instagram was an obvious outlet to share with the world.

Hopefully she doesn’t start trying to make a break for it by opening her door. We have a door knob cover for her door, but those only last so long until those little hands figure them out. We can’t wait to get her sleeping on the bigger Naturepedic mattress, hopefully that will give her more wiggle room on the mattress and keep her from wandering all over. Hopefully….

It’s been abnormally cooler than usual for mid-May in Texas, but we made several attempts to swim in our recently opened neighborhood pool. The first time we ventured to the pool, the sun was out, but still not that warm. She insisted on wearing her floaties, but only made it so far.

The timid look on her face says it all. I’m not going a foot further!

I plunged into the cold water in an attempt to get her to join, but no luck. We were in and out of the pool in 5 minutes.

The next trip was sunny, until we started walking down for a swim. As we walked, dark storm clouds rolled in right over us. WTF!? But being the stubborn guy that I am, we went for it anyway. Avery gave another shocked look upon first getting her feet in the still very cold water…

But this time I held her to get all the way in and although she was super tense the entire time, we enjoyed a little splashing around together in the kid pool. Then we went over to the adult pool for a daddy-daughter swim with plenty of throwing her in the air. She had fun…..for a few minutes, but the increasing wind and dropping temps had her shivering, so we ended the swim and made our way back home hoping for warmer days ahead. Not sure if it was a sign, but we saw this poor dead snake on the walk back.

And if it was a sign, who knows what to make of it. I sure don’t. As a reptile lover, I don’t think it’s a good one though. Poor guy…

The forecast is showing warmer temps are coming, as if there’s any doubt in Texas, so I’m sure our third attempt will yield a successful swim. Although, I don’t mind a nice cold plunge myself.
