Outer Banks Vacation: Going Home is Bittersweet

The day had come, we were going home after our week long family vacation in Corolla, NC. You know that bittersweet feeling of finally returning home where you can get back into the normal routine of things? Bitter, because vacation is over, but sweet because you’re happy to be in the comfort of your home again.

Unless you totally despise home. In that case, the end of vacation is probably all bitter. For us, we were ready to get back to focus on our daughter getting over her staph infection. It wasn’t worse, but not better either. On the bright side, she was in good spirits as we woke her up at the break of dawn to cram into our Chrysler Town & Country rental.

Uncle Paul, Aunt Tammy, and G-Ma were told by a local business owner that the traffic gets backed up worse than someone on a low fiber diet and we should leave before 6 am. We were planning on getting a little more sleep and leaving around 9 am, but didn’t want to challenge the local’s advice.

At just past four in the morning, we started our day loading the van, cleaning around the beach house, and double checking, then triple checking to make sure we didn’t forget anything. Once all was said and done, the family stood outside to say goodbye. Paul, Tammy, Grandma, Aaron, and Noah were driving North back to Pennsylvania, and G-Ma, Kelley, Avery, and I were heading South back to Texas. Aunt Tammy snuck in some goodbye snuggles with Avery who was not quite 100 percent awake.

These two spent quality bonding time together during the trip. Avery even learned surfer speak from Tammy, she’s been saying “Hang ten, dude.” since we left. My brother Preston and I bid our farewells to cousins Aaron and Noah next.

G-Ma posed with her little brother, aka Uncle Paul, for the last pic before climbing in the van.

No clue why I don’t have a picture of us with Grandma, but never fear, we gave her lots of love too. We were already behind on leaving before tourist traffic had us sitting forever, so we waved goodbye to our beach house and started the journey to the airport.

Sand Piper treated us well, but just ask Dorothy, she knows there’s no place like home. A few pit stops later and we were in Newport News to eat at Whole Foods Market just as we did on our way in.

Everyone made use of the omelette and waffle bar in Whole Foods except me. I had cooked enough awesome local tuna from the night before and expected to chow down on the perfectly cooked, fork tender fish fillet. But fate had other plans; I left the damn thing in the fridge wrapped in foil! Ask anyone, I wasted a good thirty minutes brooding over this unfortunate blip in my memory. Silver lining, Paul and Tammy had packed it and hopefully enjoyed every savory bite.

This time, we had a couple hours to hang around since our flight didn’t depart until 7:05 pm. Yeah, waking up before 5 am for a 7 pm flight is way down on my list of cool things in life. Good thing the shopping center had a small playground.

Avery spent a good hour with non-stop play on the enlarged animals as G-Ma, Preston, and Going Mom visited the surrounding shops. Luckily, G-Ma didn’t show up with another giant pink dolphin.

The cook at Whole Foods had given me a leftover waffle that I said I wanted to give one of the homeless guys walking around the parking lot, so that’s how I spent most of my time before heading to the airport.

Side story: we saw the homeless guy the first day we came in and got worked up when he approached us, cigarette in hand, and asked for money. Uncle Preston really wanted to give him a mouthful, but we never got the chance. No giant waffle for the homeless smoker I guess. We got over it pretty fast.

The trip to the airport only took an hour, and turning in our beloved rental van was easy. This left us with close to four hours of hanging at the Richmond Airport. Sure, plenty of people have to wait much longer, but this is my story, so I’ll whine anyway. And four hours with a toddler feels a lot longer!

For whatever reason, security check found my bag to be of interest which led to me getting searched, full body style. This helped pass some of the time, and luckily they never found whatever they thought they found so I was allowed to pass go……..but I never collected $200. Instead, Avery and I searched for our own money around the airport.

We never found $200, but we did find two pennies. Hey, it’s two of something, right? One was from G-Ma though. I think Avery figured it out.

For snacking, I unwrapped a giant cucumber I bought at the local farmer’s market and proceeded to share with Avery. Good thing we’re both Nuttzo Fanatics!

Don’t knock it till you try it. NuttZo + anything is almost guaranteed to be delicious! To make things awkward, an old lady who was working as bartender approached me and asked where I learned to eat a cucumber like that. How do answer a question like that?! My wife just shook her head in shame. Sorry, Kelley.

The time had finally arrived to board our flight for the last part of our journey back home. With all of us in our seats, including Pinky the Dolphin with Avery, we were on our way to DFW.

Throughout the day-long adventure, Avery had done surprisingly well at keeping it together. I would’ve lost money if we bet on how long until she broke down. It wasn’t until we walked in the door to our home at close to 11 pm that she finally let the lack of sleep set in. Not helping things was coming home to more potty (pee and poop) stains from our cat all around the house. Kelley frantically dealt with an upset toddler as she cleaned each mess one by one and I prepared a quick meal for everyone.

Stress levels remained high, but it was nice to be home. We all cleaned up, got Avery in her bed, and sat in front of the TV to pass out to HGTV. Wow, what a trip! Vacation was over, but there was more to be done now that we were home, including get rid of Avery’s staph and my looming shoulder surgery.

Outer Banks Vacation: Journey to the Beach House

The first day of our Outer Banks family vacation was mostly just getting to our destination in Corolla, NC. We rented a beach house through Seaside Vacations for Going Mom, Avery, G-Ma, Grandma, Uncle Preston, Aunt Tammy, Uncle Paul, and their boys/my cousins Aaron, Noah, and Nick.

Besides Kelley (aka Going Mom), Avery, my mom (G-Ma), Uncle Preston, and myself, the rest of the family were driving down from their home state of Pennsylvania. For us, we first had a plane trip to Richmond, Virginia.

From Richmond, we rented a car to drive four hours to our destination.

Then we could officially start our vacation. Unless you count waking up at around 4 am with a toddler as vacation.

Surprisingly, Avery handled getting up and out the door much better than expected. If I had placed a bet on it, I would’ve been out money. One of our friends, Mr. Penta, was so kind as to agree to drop us off and keep our car at his house so we didn’t have to pay for parking. How awesome is that? I’m scared of when we will have to pay him back by driving him to the airport a 5 in the morning on a weekend. Geesh!

Getting to the airport proved issue-free, then we just had to find coffee (easy to do at DFW), and entertain this little girl.

Mommy and Daddy put Uncle P to work for as long as possible.

That did the trick for a bit. Of course, my little brother spent the entire night staying up partying with friends and had zero sleep, so his effectiveness only lasted so long. Luckily, boarding time arrived quickly. The bad part of this was that I downed a hefty dose of caffeine and needed to pee a lot. Happens every time, I never learn.

Going Mom and G-Ma sat with Avery in the middle and Uncle P and I sat on the same row but different sides with other people. We were right behind the girls though, which made for great entertainment watching them keep Avery busy. G-Ma always seems to put a smile on her face.

Again, Avery surprised us with how well she behaved on the flight. We expected her to sleep a little, but that never happened. Maybe that’s what she was trying to do as we waited for our car rental.

Whatever she was going for, it never worked out as our rental car van was prepped and ready to go. If I had a preference in vans, I would’ve gone with the Honda Odyssey only because I’ve heard so many great things, but rocking the Chrysler Town & Country turned out to be pretty cool. Cool in the sense of vans, that is.

We found a Whole Foods Market and a Costco right next to each other in Newport News off the highway and planned to make a stop there.  As a family that avoids all fast food and eating out in general, finding a Whole Foods was essential as a place to grab wholesome food to fuel our journey. Having a group of hungry people riding in a van together is less than ideal, and thanks to Whole Foods, we avoided any hangry outbursts.

After getting a bite to eat, we bought a few groceries at Whole Foods and drove across the street to Costco for more food to bring to our rental house. And Uncle P was so amazed with the prices of Bud Light that he bought a case. Most was for him and Cousin Aaron to have while hanging out, but he made sure to enjoy a few beverages in the backseat as we made the trip.

No sleep and a few beers made for quality commentary from my brother. With every sight of water, bay, ocean, pond, or just a puddle, he’d say “That’s a good fishin’ hole right there.” and then laughed. Eventually, we were all saying it and laughing along. Why? No clue, but I’m sure lack of sleep played a role.

Avery gave in to a couple of very short naps as we drove, but the excitement of seeing construction trucks and spotting Jeeps just made it too hard to sleep I guess. With several beers down the hatch, Preston turned his third row seating into a bed the best he could for probably just around thirty minutes. He got a little more sleeping time since my navigator/wife never entered the exact address of our rental house and we ended up driving 5 miles past the place.

I gave her a hard time, but tried to back off once I realized I was pushing her patience too much. Note to all husbands, little sleep and food is not the time to give your spouse a hard time. Why do I feel like I’ve made note of this many times before?

Either way, arriving at our final vacation destination helped improve everyone’s mood. We quickly unpacked as we were greeted by the rest of our family who had arrived just a couple hours earlier. Before it turned dark, we walked the half mile distance down to the beach for Avery’s first official ocean sighting.

She was amazed at the vast body of water and quickly fell in love. The waves were calm, the water pretty cool, but getting our feet in was a must. G-Ma took first dibs at getting her feet wet with Avery.

Going Mom is the camera expert in the family, so she took most of the pics, obviously. As she started shooting, I took my turn with Avery’s first ocean experience.

Kelley then took over playing with our precious daughter (who still had very little sleep!) and reveled at the site of the moon.

With the camera back in her control, my wife took a picture of the rest of us before we all returned back to the beach house.

Aunt Tammy happens to be quite the photographer as well, and she caught an excellent shot of our little family on the beach.

Tired, hungry, and in need of a shower, we quickly checked off each to-do before heading to our rooms for the night. Our sleeping quarters during the week long stay was the size of a dorm room with a bunk bed. The plan was daddy on top with mommy and Avery on bottom.

Things don’t always go as planned though.

That’s it for day one. Stay tuned for our first full day of beach fun in the Outer Banks!

Waving to the Airplanes: #MySundayPhoto – 10.04.15

We’re at the stage of toddlerdom (hey, it’s on Wiktionary!) where every new thing/word is repeated somewhere between 10 to 50 million times a day. One of those things is “plane” or “jet” every time she hears one flying overhead.

Oh, I should mention we live between two airports, one being the extremely busy DFW Airport. In other words, there’s a lot of planes that fly over us. We rarely noticed the flying vessels until now, since Avery calls out their presence upon each passing. We’re proud of our girl for everything she’s learning, obviously, but the repeated words can take a toll sometimes. First world problems, I know.

We encourage Avery with supportive words when she acknowledges a color, sound, object, etc, so now we have her waving to the planes as they fly by.

#mysundayphoto, toddler, kids, parenting, growing up, love

I’m not sure if she understands that she’s waving to people (like we told her), or just the actual jet and/or plane, but it’s cute nonetheless. Speaking of, we also try to explain the difference between jet and plane since she’s been using both words.

Essentially, all jets are planes, but not all planes are jets. The propeller driven planes and in a different category. All of this just goes over her head (ha ha, puntastic!), but I know she’ll eventually catch on.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Do you have a lot planes fly near your home?

Are there things you never or hardly noticed that your kid constantly discovers around your home now?
